CD Review
"Twenty"
Released CD by Dee Lucas
This out-bound voyage toward the mystical islands of Cuba first induces us to ‘Tighten Up’ (first single release for “Twenty,” 2024) in preparation for the journey, as National Billboard Charting Recording Artist, Saxophonist & Composer, Dee Lucas provides the line and compass to start us on this Caribbean journey.
Musically inspired by George Howard, Grover Washington, Jr. and Miles Davis, Lucas gives us ‘Tighten Up,’ produced by west coast guitarist, Adam Hawley, Caleb Middelton, and Lucas himself. This crew, ALL provide the initial lifeline for this travel. With Lucas on soprano saxophone, Hawley on keys and guitar, Mel Brown on bass, Eric Valentine on drums and Caleb Middelton on keys, this trek is now in sail, bound for Cayo Santa Maria for your ‘Cuban Cigar Nights.’ This smooth Latin vibe (‘Cuban Cigar Nights’) invokes not only the Cuban culture to the ear, additionally it balances-out just the right mix of saxophone, keys, guitar, drums and bass with thanks to Luigino Rosaria, Dee Lucas, Jordan Love, Eric Lampley and Tony Lewis.

In deep waters, this voyage continues towards the mystical land of ‘Shelter Island,’ with its magical yet mysterious repetitive tones. Here, west coast bassist, Darryl Williams teams up with Lucas on soprano sax and Gordon Campbell on drums to sooth the soul. Ultimately, it is Williams that mixes and produces this masterwork. Amid this melodious journey, a ‘Weak Spot’ is discovered, and vocalist Kevin Bennett melodiously confesses to the flaw! Oh, but Bennett’s sweet smooth vocal sound accompanied by Lucas on soprano sax cancels out the weakness! This is super nice thanks to Melvin ‘Melly’ Baldwin, Kevin Todd ‘Kipper’ Jones, and Dee Lucas. And for this one, a special thank you goes out to Theodore ‘Theo’ Gkoutsidis who plays guitar.
Finally, this voyage culminates back to land with a celebration of “Twenty” years! Yes, twenty years of professional play for Dee Lucas as he collaborates with producer, Michael Broening, Mel Brown on bass and Freddie Fox on guitar. Here, on deck, we have Lucas on both tenor and soprano sax. Altogether, this crew develops this intense yet spirited masterpiece, “Twenty.” Smooth jazz lovers, do not miss this cruise, do not allow this ship to sail without you! With Dee Lucas and friends, you are always sailing to faraway places!
